African Music South of the Sahara |
If you have heard a few recordings of African Negro music, you will probably have no difficulty in recognizing other pieces from this, one of the most interesting style groups in the realm of traditional music. There is indeed a great deal of homogeneity in the music of this vast area, but it has become clear that there are also differences among the regions and tribes.
We are considering the music of Africa south of the Sahara, only, in this volume. Perhaps we are not especially justified in splitĀting this continent into Northern and sub-Saharan areas, for the Negro cultures have evidently carried on a lively exchange of music with the lighter-skinned inhabitants of the northern part of Africa. 118 |
